First light and images with a new toy!

So I’ve been helping a new friend out with his new 11″ Celestron Edge HD telescope with Celestron NightScape CCD and NexGuide imaging setup, and about the time he was getting set up to make some progress, he broke his foot and decided he wouldn’t be able to deal with such a heavy scope going forward.  Thus I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get a good deal on a nice relatively new Edge HD scope.  While the cameras aren’t what I probably would have chosen myself if I was buying new, they give me the opportunity to try some new things.  I’ve posted a couple of photos of the new setup as well as my first imaging attempt at M57, the Ring Nebula.  Enjoy!

BTW, I’m hoping to get back to some construction on the observatory within the next month.

Observatory Roll-off Post Piers Poured

It’s been several weeks since I posted them, but I’ve put up a couple of sets of pictures showing the last several months of work to get power and water out to the observatory and animal shed, as well as the footings for the roll-off rail posts. That’s pretty much it for construction until the weather cools down, but I hope to post some updated design drawings when I have a chance. I also still have all my images from the Venus transit to finish organizing and post.

Solar Eclipse Pictures Posted

While we weren’t able to see the full annular eclipse from the Austin area, I was able to capture the first 50 minutes or so of the solar eclipse before losing it in the trees.  I’ve posted a couple of collage photos, and will add others along with an animation later this week.

Foundation being poured this week!

It’s really happening! After many months of work on the footings and site prep (not to mention the design work to get to that point), I’m finally getting the slab for the observatory poured. I have plenty of pictures to post on the prep work as soon as I can organize them. Expect many more from the pouring process!

Annual Pilgrimage to Scope City

I just got back from my hike across the hill from the Union Square area in San Francisco over to the Scope City store near Fisherman’s Wharf. Given that we don’t have a brick and mortar scope store in the Austin, TX area, I usually try to visit one when I’m in the area. I’ve been to this Scope City a number of times when I’ve been out here on business, as well as the one in Vegas once. When I’m in the San Jose area I try to get to the Orion store in Cupertino. Like so many other industries, it’s really hard for these local stores to stay going, when it’s usually easier and cheaper to buy online. Since I generally have no choice but to buy online, I don’t particularly feel bad for going for the best deal. For the locals, however, having a place to walk into and someone knowledable to talk to is typically worth the extra cost.

The store is certainly worth a visit, and the guys working there are always great. For someone like me, it’s the little accesories they have that I find most useful. They do have a ton of scopes on display, but most of them are old discontinued models, generally still with pretty hefty pricetags. I suspect most are on consignment, but I’ve never really asked. It’s understandable that it’s hard for a store to have a significant investment on hand in the form of current display models. Anything current they have goes straight out the door. The same is generally true of the Orion store as well, although their store is a fraction of the size with a fraction of the scopes, and with all Orion brands, things tend to be a bit newer and look more uniform. Still, I’ve never walked into any scope store and seen the latest greatest thing on display. Bummer!

Observatory Plan Pics Uploaded

Hi Everyone,

I’ve been working on a 3-D model of the observatory to let me work out all the dimensional issues and make sure I’m happy with it before I start any construction. I’ve uploaded an isometric view and an animation to give everyone an idea of what it will look like. I’m still working on it and will post additional pictures as I have time. Still, thought I’d share with you what I had. Enjoy!

Dark Skies in Kauai!

We lucked into scheduling our vacation in Kauai to coincide with the monthly star party of the Kauai Educational Association for Science & Astronomy (K.E.A.S.A.) and were able to enjoy some really nice dark skies.  I’ve posted some pictures from the star party here, and will be adding some post processed versions of the wide field Milky Way shots when I have time to work on them.

A Rosette by Any Other Name

Well, after months of fiddling with this off and on every few weeks, I finally got a process of the Rosette that both I and my wife like.  Now maybe I’ll work on a few other nebulae shots I have where the star density is high.

Note I’ve also done a bit more re-arranging of things.

Re-arranging a bit

You may notice some changes to the layout of the site. I’m going to subdivide the astrophotos a bit. So far I’ve pulled the planetary out of the rest, making a nicer looking first page to the gallery. At some point I’ll separate the deep sky objects into galaxies, nebulae, clusters, etc. Moving these around break some of my embedded images on Cloudy Nights and elsewhere, so sorry about that. The links still work, but the thumbnails move.

Site updates — Everywhere!

Hi all. I just updated both the gallery and blog to the latest versions. Looks like everything is working well, but please feel free to let me know if you find a problem. I’ve also started updating a site of the observatory kind. Well, just packing up all the equipment for the moment, but hopefully I’ll get a slab poured before the end of the summer. I need to get the new 10 acres fenced so the livestock can run it before I spend too much time on the observatory. In the meantime, I’m working on updating/finishing the drawings for the roll-off, and have enlarged everything by a foot in each direction so the main observatory floor will now be 16×26′!
